Caution! Cellar Society Does Not Observe Dry January

Cellar Society Newsletter January 2025

As we enter the new year instead of putting away your wine glass, we invite you to explore a beautifully curated selection of wines from some of the world’s most prestigious wineries. These bottles represent craftsmanship, heritage, and a unique sense of place. This month’s lineup brings a global perspective, featuring wines that take us from the sunlit vineyards of Australia to the historic Rhône Valley, the rolling hills of Italy, and the iconic Napa Valley. Let’s uncork, unwind, and begin our wine journey.

Sophisticated & Bolder Things

Umani Ronchi CaSal di Serra

From the Marche region of Italy, Umani Ronchi is a family-run winery with a deep connection to its land and history. Their CaSal di Serra is crafted from Verdicchio grapes, one of Italy’s most underrated white varietals.

Umani Ronchi captures the crispness and minerality of the Adriatic coast in this wine. Bright notes of green apple, citrus, and almond make it a perfect pairing for seafood risotto, creamy pastas, or roasted chicken with herbs.

Bolder Things

I know you’re probably thinking, “Wait a second now… I thought each package gets two wines!” It does! No need to worry this next wine was so good, we had to put it in two packages so more people could have it!

Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Nestled in Australia’s renowned Margaret River region, Leeuwin Estate is a family-owned winery celebrated for its artistry and innovation. Known primarily for their Art Series Chardonnay, Leeuwin also crafts exceptional reds like this Cabernet Sauvignon. Their meticulous vineyard practices and commitment to sustainable farming result in wines of elegance and depth.

This Cabernet Sauvignon showcases blackcurrant, plum, and herbal notes with a balanced structure and a refined oak finish. Pair it with rosemary lamb chops or a savory beef Wellington for a true culinary delight.

Famille Perrin Côtes du Rhône

The Perrin family has been a cornerstone of winemaking in the Rhône Valley for five generations. As the proprietors of the legendary Château de Beaucastel, they bring the same passion and expertise to their Côtes du Rhône wines. This approachable blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre offers red cherry, blackberry, and a whisper of black pepper. Famille Perrin’s dedication to organic viticulture shines through in every sip. Enjoy this wine with a classic French cassoulet or charcuterie for a pairing rooted in tradition.

Finer Things

Boekenhoutskloof The Chocolate Block

Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most prestigious wineries, situated in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. The winery’s name translates to “ravine of the Boekenhout” (a native Cape Beech tree), reflecting its rootedness in the region.

The Chocolate Block is a Syrah-based blend with Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Viognier, crafted to showcase the bold, rich flavors of South African terroir. Notes of dark chocolate, blackberry, and spice make it an ideal match for slow-cooked stews, grilled venison, or even a decadent chocolate dessert.

Post & Beam Cabernet Sauvignon

From the renowned Far Niente family of Napa Valley, Post & Beam celebrates the artistry of winemaking with a focus on purity and elegance. Named after the architectural tradition of post-and-beam construction, this wine embodies simplicity and sophistication.

Aromas of cassis, vanilla, and toasted oak lead to a palate of dark fruits and silky tannins. This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with ribeye steak, roasted winter vegetables, or a cheese plate featuring aged cheddar and Gouda.

Cigar Pairings

We know, we know. “Cigars don’t go with wine, do they?” Yes, yes they do, and this month’s selections are a testament to the artistry of winemaking, offering a taste of some of the finest wineries across the globe. For cigar lovers, the bold flavors of the Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Boekenhoutskloof’s The Chocolate Block pair beautifully with a full-bodied cigar. Meanwhile, the Famille Perrin Côtes du Rhône complements a milder Connecticut-wrapped cigar for a more delicate pairing.
