March Wine Club Wine Is In!
Whatever the Problem, Wine is the Solution
Hello Winos! According to chemistry, alcohol is a solution, therefore wine is a solution. And boy do we have some fun solutions to share with you today. For this lovely month of March, we have picked some absolutely fabulous wines for our Cellar Society.
Sophisticated & Bolder Things
Dona Paula Estate Sauvignon Blanc
This 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina is really cool, especially if you are a wine nerd. The winemakers at Dona Paula have taken grapes from both of their estate vineyards. One vineyard is as close to sea level as you can get without being in the ocean(about 4.5 feet), and the other is up on the side of a mountain at 3,280 feet above sea level. By blending these two Sauvignon Blanc grapes, you get the sea salt minerality and citrus fruit from the lower vineyard mixed with the floral herbaceous notes of the upper vineyard.
Simi Cabernet Sauvignon
Simi Vineyards is located in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California. It was founded by Giuseppe Simi and his brother Pietro after they moved here from Montepulciano, Italy in 1876. Giuseppe’s Daughter Isabella is the one who skyrocketed Simi into the limelight after they almost lost everything during prohibition. The current owner and winemaker now partner up to continue her legacy and work with other girl bosses to change the world one glass of wine at a time. Simi Cabernet Sauvignon is full of rich flavors of dark plum and black cherry with a hint of spice and ripe tannins with flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and dried cranberry. This vibrant, fruit-forward wine is laced with flavors of toasted oak and hints of warm brown spice and finishes with velvety tannins.
Bolder Things
La Grande Cuvee Dourthe Bordeaux
Dourthe Vineyards is a family-owned vineyard in Bordeaux, France with a hyperfocus on terroir and the effect terroir has on the nuances of wine. Their La Grande Cuvee comes in three ways: white, red, and rose. This month we are featuring their Red Bordeaux. La Grande Red Cuvee is 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, a hint of toast intermingles with black and red berry fruit. Initially sumptuously smooth on the palate, the wine gains momentum to unleash delicious, fruit-laden texture, oozing freshness and appealing spicy notes. Very well-balanced overall, backed by rounded, silky tannins and culminating in a long, fruity final woven with well-integrated oak.
Achaval Ferrer Quimera
Achaval Ferrer is a small winery in Mendoza that focuses on low yields with high concentrations. One of the vineyard’s philosophies and low intervention with the vines; making it so it is as natural as possible. Quimera, or Chimera in English is a blend of 45% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 18% Cabernet Franc. Green bell pepper and oak spice open the nose. After aeration, ripe black-fruit aromas are revealed. Broad, bright, and juicy on the palate with sweet tobacco, blueberries, cedar, sesame, licorice, and violets.
Finer Things
Poggio Al Lupo Toscana
Poggio Al Lupo is located in the Maremma region of Tuscany. Poggio Al Lupo means Hill of the Wolf named for the estate that the owner Antonio Moretti purchased in 1999. Their Toscana is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It exudes enticing aromas of blackberry and a touch of cedar. On the palate, it unveils layers of dark plum and a hint of mocha. The wine’s refined tannins and bright acidity provide a structured framework, leading to a long, memorable finish.
Chateau La Garde Pessac Leognan
Pessac-Leognan Appellation is the birthplace of Bordeaux, where vineyards were first planted. The Chateau La Garde, the estate, has been included in the Kingdom of France since the Cassini family drew up the general map in 1756. This Bordeaux blend is 62% merlot, 31% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, and 2% petit verdot. Château La Garde reveals a dense purple hue as well as impressive blueberry and black cherry fruits intermixed with tobacco, cedary spice, and dried herbs. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, with notable purity as well as building, ripe tannins.
